Dr. Tonia Nicholson Remembered for a Lifetime of Leadership in Emergency Medicine and Resuscitation Science

The New Zealand Resuscitation Council is mourning the loss of Dr. Tonia Nicholson, an internationally respected emergency physician and leader in resuscitation science, who passed away peacefully on July 16, 2026, at the age of 58. Her passing marks the loss of a remarkable clinician, educator, researcher, and advocate whose work transformed emergency care in New Zealand and around the world.

For more than two decades, Dr. Nicholson was a dedicated and highly valued member of the New Zealand Resuscitation Council. Representing the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM), she served with distinction in several leadership positions on the Council’s Executive Committee, including Secretary and Treasurer. Throughout her years of service, she became widely respected for her integrity, expertise, and unwavering commitment to improving patient outcomes.

Dr. Nicholson made extraordinary contributions to the advancement of lifesaving science across New Zealand and Australia through her work on the Australian and New Zealand Committee on Resuscitation (ANZCOR) Adult Advanced Life Support (ALS) Guidelines. Her influence extended well beyond Australasia through her longstanding involvement with the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR). As a member of the ILCOR Adult Advanced Life Support Task Force for more than a decade, she helped shape international evidence-based resuscitation practices, ensuring that clinical guidelines reflected the latest scientific research and ultimately improving survival outcomes for patients worldwide.

Her colleagues remember Dr. Nicholson not only for her exceptional medical knowledge but also for the generosity with which she shared it. She devoted countless hours to collaboration, education, and mentoring, always striving to strengthen emergency care systems and support fellow healthcare professionals. Her work elevated New Zealand’s standing within the global medical community and left a lasting legacy that will continue to influence emergency medicine for years to come.

In recognition of her extraordinary service, the New Zealand Resuscitation Council recently awarded Dr. Nicholson the prestigious Sir David Hay Medal, the organization’s highest honour for outstanding or lifelong contributions to resuscitation and emergency care in Aotearoa New Zealand. Established in 1999, the award recognizes individuals whose dedication has significantly advanced emergency medicine, and Dr. Nicholson’s inclusion among its distinguished recipients reflects the profound impact of her life’s work.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Tonia was a devoted wife, mother, daughter, sister, and friend. She was the dearly loved wife of the late Grant, cherished mother of Lily, Lani, and Tom, beloved daughter of Sue and Archie, and treasured sister of Jennifer. Her family remained at the heart of everything she did, and she balanced an extraordinary career with deep love and devotion to those closest to her.

A funeral service celebrating Dr. Tonia Nicholson’s life will be held at Seddon Park Funeral Home, 49 Seddon Road, Hamilton, at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, July 24. As colleagues, friends, and loved ones gather to honour her memory, they will celebrate a life dedicated to compassion, excellence, and saving countless lives through science, leadership, and service.
